Coast Guard Locates Missing Half Moon Bay Fishing Boat

A rescue helicopter out of San Francisco located the overdue fishing boat southwest of Santa Cruz, and lowered a rescue swimmer to board the vessel.


The Coast Guard reports that it tracked down a missing fishing boat out of Half Moon Bay, the Sunrise, and recovered the body of one man inside the boat's cabin. His name has not been released. According to the Coast Guard, he was 70-years-old.

The dramatic search and recovery began at 1 p.m. Tuesday when the Coast Guard was notified that the 40-foot-vessel was overdue. It ended within hours, 20 miles southwest of Santa Cruz.

The Coast Guard launched an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter from Air Station San Francisco and a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Station Monterey.

When the boat was spotted, a rescue swimmer was lowered from the helicopter to the fishing vessel and located the deceased man in the cabin.

The crew of the rescue boat will return the fishing vessel to Santa Cruz. Both the boat and the man's body will be turned over to local authorities.
