Mavericks Art Exhibit Opens Saturday in Half Moon Bay

Fourth annual "Everest of the Seas" show at Coastal Arts League.

Surfing fans can enjoy yet another splash of big wave art starting Saturday, when the Mavericks: Everest of the Seas exhibit opens at the in Half Moon Bay on Jan. 14.

Entering its fourth year, the show is curated by , a photographer who specializes in capturing surfers conquer world-class waves at the break located less than a mile past in Half Moon Bay.

When it debuted in 2009, the original idea for the show, according to Grant, was to bring together the most memorable photos from Mavericks' best surfing sessions.

This year, the exhibit promises no less, with art from surfers, photographers and artists, including , Grant Washburn, Eric W. Nelson, Ed Grant, Seth Migdail, Art Gimbel, Tom Rissacher, David Evans and Sue Pemberton.

The show will also feature the work of El Granada-based Mavericks surfer and .

"Shooting from the jet ski is all about timing," Canadas says. "You have to predict where each wave will break and you have to have knowledge of the reef underneath to know exactly where that sweet spot will be, so you can get that one magic shot.”

“Mavericks is a wonder of the world," Grant said. "It’s everything you’ve heard about and more. The dangers, the rocks, the sharks, the gigantic sets with waves the size of buildings and the deafening sound of it will give you the visual ride of your life."

"Mavericks surfers make it look easy, but they’re awesome athletes dealing with truly fearsome conditions,” Grant added.

Mavericks: Everest of the Seas will be on display from January 14 - February 29, 2012 at the Coastal Arts League (300 Main St., Half Moon Bay). A champagne & wine reception on January 21 at the gallery from 5 - 8 pm will feature wine from in Half Moon Bay.
