After painting with traditional media for years, I began playing with a sequin arrangement the night before my graduation. On that night, I decided to liven up my mortarboard with a bright depiction of the Eagle Nebula.

I create sewn sequin tapestry art by hand-stitching individual sequins onto a canvas and securing them with seed beads. The sequins are either attached convex- or concave-side up, and are positioned with edges overlapping so that none of the canvas shows through. As you can imagine, one piece takes many hours of work--one square inch can take up to an hour.

The effect is a very dynamic mosaic with colors that change from muted to rich to dazzling as the daylight changes, as lights are turned on and off, or as you walk past.
