The pump stopped functioning late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, San Mateo County public works director Jim Porter said today.

Initial efforts to fix the system failed, and a new pump had to be ordered from Salinas, delivered to the isolated coastal town and installed, Porter said.
Water was shut down most of Tuesday to more than 100 connections in the area, Porter said, which included homes, restaurants, businesses and schools.

At about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, the new pump started working and water service was restored, Porter said.
Residents are being advised to boil drinking water until state and local officials can run enough tests to confirm the purification system is working and the water supply is potable, Porter said.
"Until we get word from the state that the water is ok, there is a boil order in place," Porter said.
"We should have that done in a day or two," he said.
