Don't Miss the Super Moon Tonight

Moonrise is anticipated at 8:05 p.m. tonight and full moon at 9:25 p.m.

Don't miss the super moon tonight after sunset, off course.

According to National Weather Service meteorologist Austin Cross, who admits he's not an astronomy expert, the reason for the luna being so big tonight it's because of the phenomenon called lunar perigee.

"The moon will be closer to the Earth than it is the rest of the year due to its orbit varying a little bit," Austin explained. "At one time of the year, it's furthest away and at another time of the year, it's closest."

Austin said the astronomical phenomenon can be enjoyed with the naked eye because the moon will appear larger than the rest of the full moons this year. "All one needs to do is go outside and see it," he said.

Austin said the moon will be in all its glory right after it rises tonight at 8:05 p.m., with its full splendor at around 9:25 p.m.

Skies will be clear tonight for those going outside to watch the super moon, but it will be breezy with temperatures in the low 40s, Austin said.
