'Eco-Friendly Fair' This Saturday

Locals can celebrate Earth Day a little early this weekend at the San Mateo County Eco-Friendly Fair on Saturday. The event is organized by the San Mateo County Youth Commission's Environmental Protection Committee.

"Our goal is to inform youth about relevant environmental issues in San Mateo County," said Clara Murphy, a Moss Beach resident and senior at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco who is a member of the San Mateo County Youth Commission and Environmental Protection Committee.

The fair will take place at the County Center, located at the corner of Middlefield and Bradford in Redwood City, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — and the first 50 to show up will receive a free reusable bag.

"The Fair is a gathering of environmentally conscious and friendly individuals, companies, and organizations," the organization says on its website. "Come for a day filled with vendors from all over the Bay Area featuring unique, recycled, refurbished, 'upcycled' and green products, food, and special finds."

Free "DIY" workshops will be held "in order to increase your ability to easily incorporate the environment into your life," and various groups and causes will host tables where the curious can wander, listen to music, purchase products, grab a bite to eat, and learn about environmental projects and efforts in the Bay Area. Raffle drawings will also take place.

"This event will introduce youth to the importance of being green and supporting sustainable, local businesses," said Malcolm Smith, spokesperson for the City of Redwood City.
