Four Women That Made Tunnel History

In this video, State Senator Jackie Speier acknowledges four women who made history by getting the tunnel on the ballot.

 

March is National Women's History Month so it was befitting for State Sentator Jackie Speier at the the Devil's Slide Tunnels Project Grand Opening Celebration on Monday, March 25, 2013, to acknowledgement in her speech four women who made history by getting the tunnel on the ballot in 1996. Three of the women are coastsiders! Watch the video to find out who.

Speier also acknowledged the dedication of lawmakers such as the late congressman Tom Lantos who helped make the tunnel project a reality.

"Tunnel vision is sometimes the broadest vision of them all," she said.

She called the tunnels "a new landmark" and "the Golden Gate Bridge of the south."

She started her speech off with: "This is indeed a happy ending to a fairy that could have turned into a sci-fi. This is a story of road, rocks, the frog and the fog. The story of the princess who kisses the red-legged frog and a bypass turns into a tunnel."
