Half Moon Bay History Quiz: What's This Photo?

Tell us what you know about this historic scene. You could win a prize.

Do you recognize this pretty lady? Or do you know what she is holding? When do you think this photo was taken and for what?

Here are a few hints. This photo includes an image of something that was very important to the Coastside — the country, in fact — during the period of time that the picture was taken. It was used for targets at the naval gunnery school in Moss Beach. Also the woman in the photograph was "discovered" soon after having her picture taken here and became very famous. Who is she?

Tell us a brief history of this photo, courtesy of the Half Moon Bay History Association (HMBHA), by writing your answer in the comments section below.

All correct answers will be entered into a random drawing, which will determine the winner. The winner will get a prize: a copy of “Treasures of Half Moon Bay” walking guide to historic locations in town (usually sells for a $10 donation to the HMBHA).

Please reply with your answer in the comments section below by Monday, August 12, 2013. The winner will be announced in Half Moon Bay Patch on Friday, August 16, 2013.
