Half Moon Bay Sounds Off on Asiana Lawsuit Against KTVU

The airlines has since scrapped its plans to sue KTVU.

The Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash in SFO has been on the minds of many but recent incidents, including an on-air gaffe by a local television station and subsequent threat of a lawsuit by the airline have Half Moon Bay residents heated.

Asiana Airlines confirmed Monday that it would sue KTVU for incorrectly naming the pilots in the crash that killed three people.

We asked our readers this:

Asiana Airlines is suing KTVU over offensive, and fake, pilot names read on air July 12. Do you think this is the right move for Asiana? Or is there a better way to handle this? Suggestions?

This is what Half Moon Bay had to say:

  • Angela: Bad move
  • Julie: I think this is a way to obfuscate and shift blame away from themselves. If their pilots weren't so incompetent, this crash never would have happened.
  • Deb: Ridiculous! The mistakes made by Asiana cost lives and injuries. To sue over a blunder about names - which truly hurt no one - just makes them look laughable- and not in a good way.
  • Trudy: Yes. This is such a rookie mistake. Those scripts should be checked at least 3 times before they get to the News Reader's desk and the News Reader should know what she's reading and not have to rely on a teleprompter. Everyone is at fault here but ultimately KTVU hired this rookie news team. They should pay a price. The mistakes of Asiana are a whole different matter.
  • Caroline: I would think that Asiana has more important things to be concerned about. I agree that it's ridiculous the fake names were read on the news, but Asiana is reaching when they claim it is damaging to them. The damage was done when the plane crashed.
  • Nancy: Lame stuff those name probably someone hacked it
  • Joyce: It's my understanding from the different news reports I've read that before doing the story, KTVU had called the NTSB to confirm the names/identities of the Asiana pilots, and that someone at NTSB provided confirmation. Overall, the poor state of the journalism profession distresses me, but I can't blame KTVU in this instance.
  • Pam: There is a much better way to handle it.
  • Claire: Wow! Asiana is a train wreck! This is the last thing they should be focusing on.
  • Sherry: Suing Peter to pay Paul
According to Reuters, the airline announced Wednesday that it would drop the lawsuit.

"Asiana Airlines has decided not to proceed with the case since KTVU has issued a formal apology and in order for us to focus all our efforts on managing the aftermath of the accident," the South Korean company said in a statement.
