Motorists will pay one more dollar to drive across the Golden Gate Bridge as new toll rates go into effect Monday.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District's board of directors approved the toll hike on Feb. 28 as the district faces a $142 million deficit over the next five years.

The FasTrak rate will go up from $5 to $6 and the pay-by-plate rate will increase from $6 to $7.

The carpool rate, which requires FasTrak, will go up from $3 to $4.

Tolls will gradually rise by 25 cents in July 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

By July 2018, the FasTrak rate will be $7 and pay-by-plate rate will be $8.

The toll hikes are estimated to raise $138 million for the district over the next five years.

Didn't the GC Bridge district authority recently let go of the toll takers as a cost saving measure and refrain from increasing tolls? And yet they're doing it anyway. I'm sure next someone in the GC District will be getting a raise.

Let's look at the numbers. They say 43.8 Million cars cross the bridge each year... Lets divide that in half to only count tolls paid. At $5 per car thats $ 109.5 million !!! every year !!! Do you want to know where it goes ?---- CalPERS --- in lavish retirement & Health Benefits. Both the Union and management are soaking the public. I'm shocked. The next time you pay the toll just think of the guy sitting in his condo in Florida with a great retirement and a health plan that he pays nothing for... That's where your hard earned cash is going. Enjoy !!

A recent TV news report revealed that 50% of the Toll collected on the Golden Gate Bridge is used to subsidize bus and Ferry services for Marine County commuters. Assuming that report is accurate I do not think that bridge toll should have been increased. I do not believe that tolls should be used to subsidize the use of public transit by people who choose to live in an area that requires them to commute to work? Yes, I think that using public transit is a great idea. Yes, we should use it whenever we can. However, why should I or anyone who may use the bridge occasionally be forced to pay a toll that subsidizes commuters from affluent Marin County? There should be consequences for the choices we make and others should not have to pay for the personal decisions of others. For example, for eight years I chose to live in San Jose while working in South San Francisco. I made that choice because for me owning a home in San Jose was more affordable. Prior to making the move I had to consider all things especially the cost of driving my own car, taking the train etc. Because of my work schedule the train or any other form of public transit was not a viable option. So, I downsized from my preferable car of choice to an economic vehicle with great MPH. I also began to search for people who may want to start a ride-share or drive-share carpool. As our country moves to a more Socialist form of government I expect that we will see even more of this sort of thing. Hopefully, the cost will not get to high. Many years ago I knew a man who once lived in a country that was under Communist rule. I have found that man to be very wise person. One day back when I was a teenager I was complaining about having to pay the consequences for my behavior. It was then that he advised me of one of the changes that he experienced by coming to his adopted nation (USA) and he said that he was particularly happy with it. What he said was, “when you live in a free society you get to make choices in which you will either reap the harvest or suffer the failures of those decisions. I may not always like being held accountable for my decisions but, I do like being able to make them”.
