Killer Whales Spotted Off Half Moon Bay

Birding tour out of Pillar Point Harbor has an 'amazing encounter' with more than 10 Killer Whales.

 

Here are some highlights from Saturday's Alvaro's Adventures pelagic out of Half Moon Bay, highlighting spring seabird migration. About 10 miles out we did well with an unseasonal pair of Scripp's Murrelet, which makes my first record of the species in spring off Half Moon Bay. Also odd is that they were closer into shore than we tend to find them.

Next, we saw an Ancient Murrelet, and as we looked at that a Brown Booby, which are very rare in central California, flew by.

Apart from the many phalaropes (Red and Red-necked), Sooty and Pink-footed Shearwaters, and Black-footed Albatross, we had an amazing encounter with about a dozen Killer Whales.

These appeared to be of the transient eco-type, and they were following Humpback Whales.
