Those with an appetite for mid-century nostalgia can head over to Half Moon Bay's to see a musical about life when bobby socks and Brylcreem ruled the day.
"The Marvelous Wonderettes" centers around the reunion of four friends from high school with wistful hopes and dreams that are "as big as their crinoline skirts" and have "voices to match," according to the theater.
The four friends — portrayed by Coastal Rep veterans Courtney Hatcher, Kimberly Krol, Beth Guido and Phaedra Tillery — perform arrangements of ‘50s classics throughout, including "Mr. Sandman," "Lollipop," "All I Have To Do Is Dream," "Sincerely" and "Sugartime."
Coastal Rep's Artistic Director Michael Lederman is the show's director. The play was written by Roger Bean and originally played off-Broadway at New York City's Westside Theater in 2008.
Last Friday, the production offered a sneak peek to locals during a '50s-themed sock hop at . Pub owner Cameron Palmer served diner food and a DJ took guests back in time by playing well-known songs of the day.
"It's poodle skirts and Brylcreem, with a big dose of humor for the whole family," said show producer Roxane Ashe.
“The Marvelous Wonderettes” plays at the Coastal Repertory Theater (1167 Main Street, Half Moon Bay) from Feb. 10 - Mar. 3, 2012. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
