I took this photo at Año Nuevo State Park during the first weekend of March of a young elephant seal. Elephant seal pups are called "weiners."
Elephant seals gain just over 200 pounds in their first month. The same thing happens to me over the holidays.

Phil McGrew is a former nuclear engineer who lives in San Francisco.
