PIE-EATING CONTEST VIDEO: 'Tony Romo' Attempts to Defeat Returning Champion

Saturday's pie-eating contest for ages 12 and up at the was a nailbiter down to the last minute.

Both finalists for the messiest eater award — Taylor and Bradley — hailed from Half Moon Bay. Taylor, who took top honors by receiving the loudest cheers from the audience, won an Honorable Mention for her accomplishment. (See video of their award posted in the media box at right).

Returning champ Vincent Martinez from San Jose, the winner of , was determined to beat the field again.

His strategy?

"I don't eat anything all day," he said. "And I just drink this little bit of water," he said, pointing to a tiny water bottle with enough water in it for just a few sips.

"I also blow off the whipped cream from the top," he said.

True to form, trails of whipped cream flew in this reporter's direction once emcee Dan Beeman — brother of Pumpkin Festival head organizer Tim Beeman (Miramar Events) — sent the competitors off and eating to demolish a pumpkin pie as fast as they could.

Martinez had some formidable competition this year. One of them, "Tony Romo" — actually a man named Jesús — would eat Martinez bite for bite down to the end.

A man named Mark from San Jose also represented his city well by coming in third place at the competition.

Did Martinez win? Or did Mr. Romo prevail?
