Ten Ways to Give Outside of the Gift Box And Give to Half Moon Bay and the Coastside Instead

Instead of getting that niece or nephew another scarf, gift certificate, or pair of socks, why not give a gift in their name that contributes to Half Moon Bay and the greater Coastside community instead?

Are you making your list and checking it twice?  In economically uncertain times, when the world could use a boost of humanity, why not select a gift that packs a punch and comes without buyer's remorse?  In most cases, it can even be tax deductible. Whether it's for yourself or as a gift to others, consider giving of your heart, time, or wallet this season to help the people and the causes you believe in.  Below are ten ways to get started sparking the holiday spirit and make a difference in the coming year.

Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside, (650) 712-9710

Offering a caring and nuturing environment, the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside, a division of Boys & Girls Club of America, has a goal of instilling character, leadership skills, recreational fun and exercise, as well as education and career development, in the many children it serves.  Since 1994, the non-profit, located on the campus, is making a difference for Coastside kids.

Cabrillo Education Fund (CEF), (650) 726-7871

Our schools are directly affected by state and federal education cuts. The Cabrillo Education Fund (CEF) believes the quality of life in our community depends upon the quality of education and services in our local schools. CEF's talented volunteers raise money for our local school district to help K-12 students and teachers, by funneling funds directly into the classroom.  Check out the many ways you can donate time or money to help secure our children's educational excellence and future.

Coastside Adult Day Health Center, (650) 726-5067

Do you know someone who needs assistance in their adult life? From two to up to five days a week, the people at Coastside Adult Day Health Center are helping adults improve and keep their physical and mental health, so they can see positive changes in their lives.  Consider a direct contribution to everyday efforts or the Endowment Fund.

Coastside Film Society

If you're fond of films, in particular those of independent spirit, then your heart may belong to the Coastside Film Society.  They provide viewings of independent films by local filmmakers and support local film projects, as well as host workshops on filmmaking for all levels of skill.  Their next screening event will be January 14.

Companions in Waiting Rescue & Adoption, (650) 328-0474

Perfect for animal lovers, the Half Moon Bay rescue group Companions in Waiting Rescue & Adoption works to offer care services for animals in need of a home -- as well as support and education for those who own companion animals. The group also specializes in working with county animal services to help animals needing long-term specialized care services beyond what county-based facilities can provide. You can help by providing a foster home, volunteering time or donating money.  Since 2003, the lives of many dogs, cats, kittens and puppies have been stabilized and enriched.

Half Moon Bay Volunteer Fire Department, (650) 726-5213

Members of the Half Moon Bay Volunteer Fire Department work tirelessly to protect Coastside citizens, educate their community about fire safety, and reach out to local groups through fundraising, grant awards, and scholarships.  A volunteer division of the Coastside Fire Protection District, they are the supporting arm of paid local firefighters.   Want to do your part?  Contact them for ways to volunteer, train as a firefighter, or donate to their charity efforts.

KPDO Radio 89.3 FM, (650) 646-KPDO

In Pescadero the airwaves are alive and spreading the word from the South Coast community.  The station broadcasts local public affairs programs, music, debate and discussion from the heart of the community, and provides free publicity for local non-profits in a volunteer, non-commercial format. Help launch the Pescadero Teen Radio Project, underwrite a program, manage the website, or even sweep the studio floor!

Spanishtown Historical Society, (650) 726-7084

As the oldest town in San Mateo County, Half Moon Bay's rich history makes it a cornerstone of California heritage.  Help preserve the story, landmarks, and people that make up our historical blueprint by supporting your local history effort.  The Spanishtown Historical Society accepts monetary donations, as well as donations of time and effort.

Surfrider Foundation

Coastside residents are fond of their beaches.  Make an effort to make our shores clean and accessible by donating to the Surfrider Foundation's San Mateo County Chapter.  They sponsor events and fundraisers for keeping our beaches vibrant and foremost in the mind of coastal residents and visitors.  Volunteers are needed for beach clean-up events, classroom visits and assorted projects.  The Surfrider website is loaded with useful information, including water toxin conditions for local beaches.

WildLIFE Associates, 1-800-244-WILD

Are you a nature or animal lover?  Since 1980, it has been Half Moon Bay's Wildlife Associates' mission to make sure children and adults alike understand the nature around them and gain an appreciation of animals.  This educational outreach non-profit has helped over 7 million students through providing programs and workshops for kids and adults, as well as outreach.

There are many more deserving non-profit groups in Half Moon Bay and the Coastside that can be listed here, of course. The main point is not to forget how the gifts we give during the holiday season have the potential to be leveraged into a gift that continues to contribute to our community throughout the year.
