Viewfinder Photos: Flying Finches of the Half Moon Bay Coastside

A photo gallery of birds taken in our backyard.

The American Goldfinch is abundant in the residential areas of the Coastside, especially where people mount bird feeders. Spring is here and the males are beginning to turn a bright yellow. Their acrobatics and vivid color make them an excellent subject for action photography.

A simple sock feeder filled with nyger thistle attracts more finches then can feed at one time, creating some competition and short territorial conflicts. A camera, a tripod and some patience can award you dynamic pictures of these birds in flight.
