Viewfinder: Owls of Canada Cove

A new owlet makes its way into the world.

The owls of Canada Cove have raised a new owlet this year. These are the same Pacific Great Horned Owls I back in January. That chronicled the raising of two owlets in the summer of 2010.

Great Horned Owls are territorial and this pair continue to live in the eucalyptus grove near my home. These owls mate earlier then most birds and chose their nest in January, the same nest they used last year. That nest again proved to allow an excellent view for birders to observe a newborn owlet and the opportunity for me to document its progress in pictures.

This photo essay follows the owls from their mating season in January to the fledgling owlet that left the nest this week. The persistent rainy season this year limited the opportunities to photograph the family, but I was able to capture a few good shots.
