A Labyrinth of Literacy

Coastside photographer demonstrates labyrinth building with books.

sponsored a talk and book signing by local photographer and labyrinth builder Lars Howlett yesterday, where Howlett built a walkable labyrinth near the entrance to the Shoppes at Harbor Village using secondhand books from the store.

Howlett, former staff photographer for the , is the creator of a photo journal, "Steps Along an Unfolding Path: A Journey Through Life and Labyrinths," documenting his study and practice of labyrinth creation from Nepal to France and back here in Half Moon Bay.

The labyrinth is an ancient meditation device and decorative design, explained Howlett, who spoke to his feelings and experiences with labyrinths around the world and reflected on the pictures displayed in his book at the signing.
