At 8.7%, Half Moon Bay's October Unemployment Rate Slightly Higher Than County, Lower Than State and US

Unemployment rates were released by the state's Employment Development Department yesterday.

Preliminary unemployment rates released yesterday by the California Employment Development Department (EDD) for October indicated that 12.4% of state residents are in need of work. According to EDD, over 2.26 million of California residents are without a job. California's rate leads the nation and is higher than the national average of 9.6%.

The data is based on a national survey of 5,500 California households and does not include agricultural jobs. (Agricultural employment is measured three seasons a year through the National Agricultural Worker Survey and is administered by the Employment and Training Administration of the US Department of Labor).

San Mateo County's rate of 8.5% was the second lowest in the Bay Area and fell a few percentage points below Alameda County (11%), Contra Costa County (10.9%) and Santa Clara County (10.6%). At 8%, Marin County's unemployment rate was the Bay Area's lowest.

Within San Mateo County, the 8.7% of Half Moon Bay workers that were reported to be unemployed last month was slightly higher than the county average. The 8.7% rate was derived from the report's estimate of the city's labor force at 6,100 individuals, an estimate that 5,600 of those individuals were employed, and the conclusion that the remaining 500 were unemployed.

Neighboring El Granada's unemployment rate was reported at 6%; however, no data was available for other unincorporated areas along the San Mateo County Coastside.

Cities in San Mateo County at the lowest end of the spectrum were Millbrae (4.5%) and Atherton (4.8%). East Palo Alto (19.7%) and the unincorporated area of North Fair Oaks (17.4%) were at the high end.

In comparison to its coastside neighbors to the north and south, Half Moon Bay fared better than Pacifica (9.8%) and slightly better than Santa Cruz (8.9%). However, rates were higher compared to neighboring cities over the hill such as Belmont (7.3%), San Carlos (5.8%), and San Mateo (6.8%). Redwood City's rate (8.5%) was slightly lower.
