Dog-Friendly Restaurant Serves Up Housemade Dog Bones

Brewmaster and chef at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company join forces to create Mavericks Bones, dog bones made of spent grains from the restaurant's famous microbrews.

is now serving dog bones to their furry four-legged customers.

The restaurant was recently named best Dog-Friendly Restaurant and second-best Dog-Friendly Bar in the Bay Area in Bay Woof’s 2012 Beast of the Bay Competition, according to a press release.

To celebrate the occasion, brewmaster Kirk Hillyard and chef Gaston Alfaro have joined forces to create special, housemade Mavericks Bones, featuring the spent grains from the Brewing Company’s small batch, artisanal beers.

Ever since its opening in 2000, the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company has been a dog-friendly gathering place for locals and visitors alike on the San Mateo County Coast. Guests are encouraged to bring their four-legged friends with them when they come to enjoy handcrafted beer, live music and local seafood specialties on the restaurant’s large patio, complete with ocean views, heat lamps and fire-pits.

Now, with the introduction of these whisker-lickin’ good Mavericks Bones and a “Dog of the Week” feature on their Facebook page, the Brewing Company is further embracing this exciting title.

The recipe of the new and instantly popular Mavericks Bones combines the spent grains from the variety of handcrafted beers made daily at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, including barley, rye or wheat from England, Germany or Argentina, mixed with eggs, flour and peanut butter.

The first bag of three Mavericks Bones is complimentary and guests are able to purchase additional bags for $1.75 each.

The Beast of the Bay Awards is an annual readers poll celebrating Bay Woof readers’ favorite dog-friendly people, places and things in the Greater Bay Area. After a three-month nomination period, the four most frequently mentioned nominees advanced to the final ballot. After weeks of deliberation, the winners were announced in the March issue and online. 

To congratulate all of the winners and nominees, Bay Woof is throwing a “Beast of the Bay Awards Party” on Saturday, March 10, from 3-8 p.m. at the El Rio in San Francisco. $10 at the door, the celebration is open to all Bay Area dog lovers 21 and over and their well-behaved canine pals. There will be live music, food and drinks, a dog costume contest and a raffle to benefit the “Best Rescue Group” winner, Muttville Senior Dog Rescue.
