Two Men's Quest to Find the Best Burrito in Town

Recalling their journey along the Half Moon Bay Coastside.

This week, we're asking readers to .

Years ago, though, two men already took it upon themselves to do some field research and find out on their own.

Their five-week journey, which they dubbed "Burrito Odyssey," began one August day six years ago in the offices of the .

"I had brought in an article from the San Francisco Chronicle about the best burritos in the Bay Area," said , who worked as department supervisor at the time.

"One place on the coast was named in the top 25 and another received an honorable mention," he said.

Determined to discover the best burrito on the Half Moon Bay Coastside, Alvarado and then-Recreation Services Manager Mike Blondino took the matter into their own hands.

"We decided to make and take the Best Burrito on the Coast Challenge and hit five places from El Granada to Pescadero," Alvarado recalled. "Each week we would hit a different place, always ordering the same burrito — Mike had beef and I had a vegetarian."

After each tasting, Alvarado said, the two would make notes about their impressions and then rank them against previous tastings.

In their search, the men sampled burritos at El Gran Amigo Taqueria in Moss Beach, in Half Moon Bay, Taqueria de Amigos in Pescadero, and next-door neighbors and located off Highway 1 in Half Moon Bay.

These five locations are also contenders in our .

How will your top choice stack up against the favorites of Alvarado and Blondino? Did the two agree on the top choice for a beef burrito and a vegetarian burrito, or did their taste buds beg to differ?

Find out on Friday at noon, when we'll reveal their top pick as well as announce your top choice in our Best Burrito poll.

One of my favorite burritos is a chile verde with only rice, sour cream and hot salsa. I tried it tonight at Tres Amigos. I like this idea - now I can try it to compare at the other restaurants. I'm excited to see how this turns out.
