Know of a Business in Town Opening or Closing?

Tell Patch who’s moving in, moving out and shaking things up in Half Moon Bay.

Sprouts & Shutters is a business column that tracks store openings and closings in Half Moon Bay and along the Coast.

Whether you're a business owner about to open a new establishment or a local resident who noticed a “Coming Soon” or “Out of Business” sign, tell Patch about it by sending us an email to christa.bigue@patch.com. Don't worry if you don't have all the details—tips are helpful, too, but please include a business name and city.

The information will be used for the Sprouts & Shutters column and to update the business directory.

"Know of a Business in Town Opening or Closing?" Yes, as a matter of fact I do; every single business on Main Street will be closing, and closing promptly, if URS gets their way and the Council just goes along and closes the Main Street Bridge for replacement: Every single one. The closures will be most immediate to those businesses closest to the bridge on the south side. It will then, one by one, close every business in staggered fashion, moving south on Main. In other words, the businesses closest to the Bridge will be the first to go, with the rest following as the Bridge work continues.

It would be sad to see this happen. I had a thought the other day: what if the City ponied up some money to give to local businesses to help create a campaign to "go the other way" into town during construction. Businesses could provide info on their websites, maps, etc. and Chamber could also help promote, for the businesses south of the bridge to give discounts to people who find the other way into town. It might even get some media attention if properly managed, and that would be good for everyone. Just a wild, crazy, creative thought to solve a temporary challenge.

Is that firm the City hired to manage PR, etc. coming up with some ideas?

Good question Laura. Don't know if they are still under contract with the City, although I think they still are. The reason I believe so is that I was told that the City would put out 4 of their "Newsletters" and so far, I think there have only been 2. They are the outfit that performs that magical function for the City.
