Mike Alifano — Half Moon Bay resident, community leader and co-owner of Main St. business — took part in the which marked the opening of the 2011-2012 .
Alifano joined Mavericks competitors, local community members and the on the waters off Mavericks Beach in Half Moon Bay on Jan. 6. Anyone was welcome to join in this year, which was a change from previous contests' opening ceremonies.
In this video, Alifano talks to Half Moon Bay Patch about participating in the paddle out and shares his opinion on how the world-famous contest has evolved into one that will benefit the local community.
