Year-Round Farmer's Market to Open at Harbor Village

Land & Sea market featuring locally sourced fruits and vegetables, prepared foods, arts and crafts to open later this month.

The first year-round farmer's market in Half Moon Bay and the San Mateo County Coastside will debut on April 22.

Located at the Shoppes at Harbor Village in Princeton and sponsored by the Harbor Village Merchants Association, the Land & Sea Farmer's Market will be held every Sunday. The certified market will feature locally sourced fruits and vegetables, prepared foods, and arts and crafts sold by local families, farmers, fisheries, artisans and distributors.

Fish, meats, cheeses, breads, herbs and flowers will also be available at the market, according to property manager David Seaton. Live music and children's activities are also planned.

According to Seaton, many expressed interest in a Sunday market at Harbor Village in the past.

"The concept had been discussed for several years," he said.

The Harbor Village merchants hoped that a farmer's market could be a way to bring increased foot traffic and business to the area.

Last year, Seaton began looking into whether such a market could be established at the shopping center.

"The buildup to the launch of the Land & Sea Farmer's Market has been a beacon of hope during some very turbulent economic times," he said.

Several Harbor Village businesses closed their doors in the last year, including The Wine Bar, , and Kings and Knights miniature golf center. Women's boutique Savvy Skirts also left to open at a new location on Main St. in Half Moon Bay.

Just a few months later, though, women's boutique and hair salon moved in.

Seaton says that the nonprofit merchants association would like to take on additional projects beyond the farmer's market.

"Our hope is to eventually establish a scholarship, microloan and education program which would allow people the needed capital and knowledge to get started in a small business," he said.

Seaton also reported that the merchants are in discussions to convert some of the additional acreage currently not being farmed from Harbor Village north to the Half Moon Bay Airport into a community farm system.

"A sustainable hyperlocal farming economy can be supported by purchases from local Princeton restaurants, and excess demand being sold at the Sunday market," he said.
