Some kids knocked on our door this morning. "Can we clean your yard?" Mike: "You want to......clean our yard?" "Yes, we want to clean up your yard."
I asked them how much they wanted for this service. "$1 each." Well...o.k....so, they went out there and cleaned up the yard. Mike later went out to inspect the job, and then we gave them each a dollar, and I also gave each of them a dollar tip.
This reminded me when I was a kid. Not including the chores given to me by my parents, I actually got strangers or neighbors to pay me when I went door to door - sometimes with a friend - to mow lawns or do yard work. My friend and I did o.k., but realized that we had bitten off more than we could chew once, when we looked into one back yard, after the man who lived there told us to cut that lawn - which was actually a yard overgrown with tall weeds!
There were also the lemonade stands, frequent babysitting, and some books my friend Leda and I produced with lots of drawings, for a nickle apiece. Then there were the plays and puppet shows my siblings and I put on for a dime admission (popcorn and lemonade extra). Well, that was decades ago...the rates have gone up. My question to you is - NOT including jobs that you did for your family or relations - what did you do to earn extra money when you were a child?
