Metabolic Training: Cutting-Edge Exercise for Results

Working out can be dull and boring....if you don't shake things up! Learn how Metabolic Training can get you FANTASTIC results in minimal time!

Remember when....
Remember when workouts alternated between long, grueling cardio stints on the treadmill coupled with a few boring trips to the gym to lift some weights? I can't tell you how many people have found this to be an unfulfilling and boring way to try and stay fit. Some people may thrive in that environment....but not me! I need variety and energy and I want to see real results for the time and effort I put in. Well, this perfect combination has a name....it's called Metabolic Training!

Metabolic Training Defined

A metabolic training workout is a fast-paced combination of high-intensity cardiovascular exercises coupled with resistance (strength) training. The cardiovascular work will work you in short bursts with some (but not a lot) of recovery time between timed sessions. The resistance training you do will be heavy enough to require real effort, but not so heavy that you can't get through the workout. The idea is to create a very high-intensity workout, one that burns fat as it adds muscle tone.

Metabolic Training Benefits
What makes metabolic training so great? These fast, challenging workouts provide the following major benefits:

  1. Shape and tone your body
  2. Increased cardiovascular efficiency and capacity
  3. Improved strength
  4. Significant calorie burning

Who Should Do This Workout
Metabolic training is a real winner when your goal is weight management or fat loss as it not only burns a significant amount of calories in a relatively short period of time, but also builds lean muscle. More lean muscle increases our Basal Metabolic Rate which means that we burn even MORE calories each day just by breathing! But even if your goal is just to boost your fitness program and get in better shape, there are no better, more well-rounded, and more efficient ways to do so than through Metabolic Training. As I mentioned earlier, this is personally my absolute favorite type of workout and in fact Metabolic Training is the foundation of our fitness programs and classes at Empowered Fitness

Metabolic workouts are not for everyday use, but 2 - 4 Metabolic Training sessions interspersed with 2 - 3 days of stretching or yoga provide an excellent program to follow that will very efficiently maximize your time working out while keeping your body strong and flexible.

Example Metabolic Training Session
Here is a simple example of a Metabolic Training workout that you can do at home, on the beach, or practically anywhere with no special equipment.

---Cardio Circuit--- (complete this circuit 3 Times with 10 seconds rest between exercises)
15 Burpees
30 Mountain Climbers
40 Jumping Jacks

Rest 1 Minute

---Resistance Circuit--- (complete this circuit 3 Times with 10 seconds rest between exercises)
20 Push ups
20 Dips
15 Squats

This seems like a simple set of exercises (and it is!) but believe me, if you were to do this routine consistently 3 - 4 times per week, you would see AMAZING results in the shape of your body, your strength, and your cardiovascular fitness.

I encourage you to explore Metabolic Training further and incorporate some aspect of it into your fitness routine if you've not already done so. It is simple to do, it's a lot of fun, and it can make a significant difference in the results you see and the way you feel!

What are your favorite workouts?  I love hearing about how others get themselves feeling healthy, strong, and energetic so let me know how YOU do it below!

With so many good Mexican restaurants in the area, why bother?

I enjoy an occasional Taco Bell, but in the same shopping center as Happy Taco with far better,Read More authentic LOCAL Mexican food! Nah! I do enjoy the Combo locations that have KFC & TACO BELL. (Face it, Americans like to have choices!). With no drive-through, perhaps it will be better than the average suburban stores along the El Camino. As for another chain restaurant in Half Moon Bay...What did you expect? Demographics will continue to dictate that we can still expect to keep our "Fast-Food-Free-Zone" between Linda Mar and HMB while "City Councils or Planning Departments in the Cities will attract them....for their tax base.

Seriously? Taco Bell? Next to New Leaf? How did this happen? Not happy about this addition and notRead More looking forward to seeing Taco Bell trash all over the place. Not sure about KFC ... we already have a fast food chicken place at Popeyes so we certainly don't need another. The high school students will probably frequent Taco Bell the most and keep it in business but I will not be going there that's for sure.

I would consider volunteering at the California State Parks but dogs are not allowed and I wouldRead More need to bring my dog.

Misha, I understand where you're coming from, but that's what we don't want to do. One reason thatRead More all dog owners are being discriminated against is those few who don't follow the rules. It doesn't matter that there are bicyclists and horseback riders who don't follow rules, they're "OK," it's the dog owners who pay the price. We want an area where our dogs can exercise freely and legally, where we won't be bothered by people who are afraid of dogs or dislike them, and where they're not at risk from horses who spook. For those of us who live surrounded by Rancho land especially, we don't want to have to drive miles to a small, fenced lot with crowds of others seeking to exercise their dogs in the same small area. We're paying for this open space with our tax dollars, and we want to have access to it. There's plenty of room for everyone.

To be honest I would probably just let my dog run around without a leash anyway, except there's soRead More much darned poison oak around these hills. I don't want her to get contaminated and then I hug her and trouble ensues.

I don't own a dog now but empathize with the dog owners who have been deprived of the right toRead More allow their dogs to run free in the national recreation area that we as taxpayers own. As a taxpayer, I want to know the rationale for this policy. If it is to protect horses from being frightened by dogs what is the basis for that? How many horses use the open space? It appears that dozens of people who have been able to enjoy walking with their dogs in the open space adjoining their neighborhood are now being grossly inconvenienced because some faceless bureaucrats are creating rules that may have no basis in reality.

What are you doing with the excess Undaria pinnatifida that is found? Can we get some of it for ourRead More compost piles at the Pacifica Sanchez Library Garden?
