Bay Area Traffic Deaths Rise Over Holiday Weekend
Statewide arrests for driving under the influence are slightly lower than a year ago
By Bay City News
Arrests by the California Highway Patrol for driving under the influence so far for the Memorial Day weekend dropped slightly from last year's total both statewide and in the Bay Area.
In a report provided by the CHP, officers in the Bay Area made 165 arrests from Friday through Monday morning. A year ago 166 arrests were made, according to the report.
The CHP arrested 1,133 drivers throughout the state for alleged drunken driving between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday, down from 1,161 arrested for that time period in 2012.
In the Bay Area two traffic deaths have been reported so far for the weekend, one more than in 2012, the CHP reported.
Statewide, 15 people have died in traffic accidents - including four on motorcycles -- while only 11 died in vehicle mishaps by that point last year. The CHP noted that six of the people killed in car crashes in its jurisdiction were not wearing safety belts.
