Environmental Concerns Over Plastic Sand Bags
The disintegrating plastic could end up in the ocean.
They're intended to help people and the environment, but they could end up polluting the Pacific Ocean.
The humble plastic sandbag is designed to divert flood-waters and shore-up soil to prevent erosion. The county uses them to anchor signs and for other purposes. But a report in the Half Moon Bay Review says the bags are disintegrating. The crumbling plastic is blowing into watersheds and could end up in the ocean.
The report states that the San Mateo County Department of Public Works will seek alternatives to plastic.
