First Bay Area Baby of New Year Born in East Bay

Sophia Trigueros delivered at midnight in Castro Valley.

The first baby born in the Bay Area in 2012 was born at the stroke of midnight at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Sophia Trigueros was born just as 2012 began on the West Coast to her happy parents Amelia and Mauricio Trigueros, residents of San Lorenzo, said spokeswoman Cindy Dove. Sophia weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces at birth and was a little less than 20 inches long.

The second baby appears to have been born at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Santa Clara at 12:01 a.m. A baby girl named Brenda was born there one minute after midnight this morning, said Kaiser spokesman Karl Sonkin. Brenda's family lives in San Jose and she weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces at birth and was 19 inches long.

Brenda and her mother, who declined to be named, were resting comfortably after the natural delivery, Sonkin said.

The third baby, and probably the first born in San Francisco, was born at 12:02 a.m. to the Wong family of San Francisco. The baby boy was delivered at California Pacific Medical Center and weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces at birth and was 20 inches long.
