Gale and Hazardous Seas Warning in Effect Today

The National Weather Service warns extremely windy conditions for the next 24 hours could leave area beachgoers and boaters in danger.

The National Weather Service is warning mariners and beachgoers in the Half Moon Bay and Pacifica areas to exercise extreme caution when venturing out or near the water due to high winds and heavy seas impacting the northern and central coastline of California Tuesday and continuing into Wednesday.

A small craft advisory, hazardous seas, and gale warning are in effect for much of the coast through 6 a.m. Wednesday as the strong winds produce big waves and dangerous rip currents, endangering beachgoers and mariners and setting vessels adrift.

Seas are expected to go build from 6 feet to 13 feet by Tuesday afternoon and will remain steep swells through Wednesday.

A small craft advisory means that wind speeds of 21 to 33 knots are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions to small craft. A gale warning means winds of 34 to 47 knots are imminent or occurring.

Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires experience and it is highly recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe harbor prior to the onset of the gale.

Commercial vessels should prepare for rough seas and also consider remaining in port until the hazardous seas subside.

Dog owners are also reminded to protect their pets from rough waves and not to attempt to rescue their dog from a surf zone.

Additionally, it is recommended that individuals avoid taking to the water during this time. If it is necessary to get underway, mariners are urged to check all their safety equipment to ensure it is in good condition and working properly. This includes a properly fitted flotation device for everyone aboard, navigation lights, and distress signals.
