A mountain lion was spotted on Wednesday night in the vicinity of 5900 block of Alpine Road in Portola Valley, according to an alert sent out by Owen Yoch to subscribers of the San Mateo County Alert System via email and text message.
The big cat was seen with a young cub in or near a driveway of a property under construction at approximately 8:00 p.m., according to the alert.
The message dispensed the following advice:
If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.
Here are a few tips:
Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
Keep a close watch on small children.
If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.
Pick up small children.
