Mountain Lion Seen in La Honda on Friday Night

Fourth time this week a mountain lion was spotted along the Peninsula.

For the fourth time in a week, a mountain lion was seen on the Peninsula.

On Friday night, a mountain lion was spotted in the vicinity of Highway 84 and Sequoia Road in La Honda, according to an alert sent out less than 15 minutes after the sighting by Sheriff's Sgt. Joe Sheridan to subscribers of the San Mateo County Alert System.

The big cat was seen at approximately 9:42 p.m., according to the alert sent via email and text message.

Earlier this week, mountain lions were seen for three days in a row.

On Wednesday night, a mountain lion sighting came from Portola Valley.

On Tuesday night, a mountain lion was in Montara. Residents were informed a few hours later via the alert system.

On Monday night, a mountain lion was in Portola Valley. Residents were notified the next morning via the alert system.

All four alert messages dispensed the following advice:

If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.

Here are a few tips:

Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.

Keep a close watch on small children.

If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.

Pick up small children.
