New Foreclosure Help Offered in San Mateo County
Three nonprofit agencies serving Coastside communities received grants to help owners and renters faced with foreclosure hurdles.
Coastside residents faced with foreclosure may apply for help from several San Mateo County nonprofit agencies, thanks to grants from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The Foundation awarded close to $500,000 to nonprofits in both San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties.
The money is intended to provide counseling and legal advice to affected residents. In addition to homeowners, renters forced out of homes due to foreclosure are eligible for help.

“The foreclosure crisis is far from over,” said Pat Krackov, the community foundation program officer who oversees grants to strengthen economic security. “With new foreclosure relief programs from the state and federal governments, homeowners will need to understand whether they qualify and what options they have.”
The agencies that received grants include:

- Housing and Economic Rights Advocates (HERA), $63,000 for a foreclosure prevention project that will provide in-depth legal services to homeowners.
- Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County, $63,000 to provide legal defense for resnters facing eviction from foreclosed properties.
- Project Sentinel, $63,000 for a HUD-certified foreclosure prevention counseling and rescue scam program for at-risk homeowners.
