Observing Memorial Day in Half Moon Bay

Monday, May 27 is the time to honor our patriots and welcome the summer.

By Kathleen Reilly

Memorial Day is a time to commemorate those who have fallen in service to the United States.

The official celebration of these heroes began in the 1860s after the Civil War, when wreaths were laid on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The practice was fully recognized throughout the existing states by 1890.

So, what is the best way to honor the holiday? For those who prefer something traditional to honor the fallen, place wreaths or flowers at war memorials or grave sites.

Locally, you can find a good selection of flowers at Repetto’s Florists, 12331 San Mateo Road, Half Moon Bay.

Also, at the American Legion Coastside Post 474 on Capistrano Road across from Mezza Luna restaurant there will be a Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. with lunch to follow. The public is welcome to attend.

In San Bruno, Golden Gate National Cemetery will hold its 72nd annual Memorial Day observance, “Never to be Forgotten,” starting at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27 at 1300 Sneath Lane. Guest speakers will be Retired Col. Allan Cruz, USMC, and Chief Johnny Johnson, World War II Navy veteran. Before the program the San Andreas Band will perform at 10:30 a.m.

And in the afternoon? Time to party! Host a barbecue, or attend a local fair or festival. You can even partake in a little Memorial Day shopping and take advantage of seasonal sales at Harbor Village shopping center, 270 Capistrano Road, Half Moon Bay.

Swimming is a viable option as well. Communities typically open the gates to pools or beaches at the end of May. Dig out your swim gear and a good book and head over to the nearest pool for a dip, or if you’re feeling adventurous, visit beaches near Half Moon Bay. Whatever you do, don’t forget to pack plenty of snacks and have a picnic.

Not tired yet? Grab a chair and a beverage for an evening fireworks display. California’s Great America will kick off an all-new fireworks display, accompanied by patriotic music, at 9:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 25-26, at 4701 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara. The event is free with park admission.

Remember, should you decide to hang a flag on Memorial Day, it should never touch the ground and it should be flown at half-staff until noon.
