One Dead, Three Recovered and Four Missing from Boat in Farallon Islands

Coast Guard still searching for sailors after boat ran aground Saturday afternoon.

 

After a 38-foot sailing vessel participating in a race around the Farallon Islands ran aground Saturday afternoon, one person has been found dead, three sailors have been recovered and four are still missing, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Alameda was alerted to the incident which took place off the coast of San Francisco at 3 p.m. on Saturday, while Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received a mayday call at about the same time, according to the agency.

In response to the call, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco launched a MH-65 helicopter from Air Station San Francisco, the 87-ft. CG Cutter SOCKEYE, and a 47-ft. Motor Life Boat from Station Golden Gate in search of the eight sailors on board. Two Blackhawk helicopters from the 129th Air National Guard unit at Moffett Field assisted in the search, the Coast Guard said.

As of Saturday evening, Coast Guard is on the scene searching for the four sailors who have not been recovered.
