UPDATE: One Rescued, One Dead in San Francisco Bay Boat Collision

Collision took place earlier today between small boat and motorized vessel.

Update 8/4 10 a.m.: Coast Guard Ensign Mark Leahey reported this morning that the name of the man who died at San Francisco General Hospital yesterday after he and his father were hit by a motorized vessel while fishing is Ninh Truong and is approximately 30 years old. Leahey also reported that Truong's father is approximately 60 years old.

Leahey also said this morning that he is not sure how many people were on board the larger boat nor does he know the current conditions of this vessel and its passengers.

"The larger boat currently is under investigation — along with the smaller vessel — to find out exactly what happened," Leahey said.

A collision earlier today in San Francisco Bay between a 19-foot dinghy and a motorized vessel off Sierra Point in Brisbane has resulted in the death of one passenger, the Coast Guard reported this evening.

The collision, which had been by the Coast Guard as taking place near Hunters Point in San Francisco, resulted in capsizing the dinghy along with its two passengers. The passengers of the dinghy were reported to be a man and his son who were out fishing.

As he was able to climb atop the dinghy's capsized hull, the father was rescued initially, but his son was trapped underneath the vessel, the Coast Guard said.

Rescuers did not know right away that the son was trapped, due to a language barrier between the man and the rescue personnel, the Coast Guard said. NBC Bay Area reports that the man and his son were Vietnamese.

The man's son was eventually recovered by righting the capsized boat.

Both men were taken to Oyster Point Marina in South San Francisco by the marina's Harbormaster, according to the Coast Guard. Once there, the men were taken to emergency medical services waiting at the scene. According to NBC Bay Area, the Coast Guard reported that the son died at San Francisco General Hospital after arrival due to his injuries.

Coast Guard crews, the San Francisco Fire Department, the San Mateo Fire Department and other local agencies — including a dive team from San Mateo County — responded to the accident.

Crews initially thought that a passenger might have been missing, and launched a search and rescue effort. The Coast Guard deployed a 25-foot response boat from Station San Francisco and an MH-65-Dolphin helicopter from Air Station San Francisco. The area was searched until it was confirmed that there had just been two passengers on the dinghy, the Coast Guard said.

Ensign Mark Leahey said this evening that the Coast Guard could not release the names or city of residence of the two men.

It is not known what caused the incident. A Coast Guard 25-foot response crew from Station San Francisco is on scene to conduct an initial investigation.

The Brisbane City Police Department is also investigating the incident. Anyone with information related to the accident is asked to contact Brisbane Police at 415-467-1212.
