PETS OF THE WEEK: Turtles, Chickens and King Pigeons

They're all available for adoption at the Peninsula Humane Society in San Mateo.

As many Coastsiders know, pets aren't confined to warm-blooded animals with fur and whiskers.

The Peninsula Humane Society says they have each of the following types of animals available:

Red-Eared Sliders (a type of turtle) There are usually a bunch of us here at PHS that would love to be adopted! Some of us are only a about five inches long while others are full grown (nearly 12 inches long!) We enjoy basking in the sun on warm days, and like to swim around and eat up all our food when we’re not basking. If you are interested in adopting any of us, make sure you have a predator-proof outdoor pond or a sizeable indoor set-up. We are going to need some space to swim! Chickens We usually have several chickens in need of a good home. Please know we do not ship animals and that you must visit the shelter before adoption. Please call (650) 340-7022 to inquire about the type of chickens available. Did you know that chickens are intelligent animals and good problem-solvers? More advanced than young children, chickens possess the ability to understand that an object, when taken away and hidden, nevertheless continues to exist. So take a few of us home and watch our complex and social nature! (Description by Peninsula Humane Society)

King Pigeons Bay Area shelters and rescues are becoming increasingly full with birds like us, king pigeons that people raise for food (squab). Generally tame and gentle by nature, we are often found stray when we are unable to fend for ourselves. We are a domestic breed, and we tend to fall prey to hawks, cats, dogs, and cars when we are out there in the big wide world. We actually make great pets because we don't bite, aren't noisy, and don't require a lot of attention. King pigeons have a lifespan of about 10 years. We are social birds that enjoy watching what goes on around us and do well in pairs or small groups. A pair could be housed in a large indoor cage, or we can be housed in outdoor predator-proof hutches or aviaries. Stop by and adopt some pigeons! (Description by Peninsula Humane Society)
