PHOTOS: Western Terrestrial Garter Snake

The western garter snake is abundant along the coast.

The most common snake we see while hiking the coastal bluffs of San Mateo County seems to be this common garter snake (Thamnophis elegans), mostly red with a light belly and yellow stripe. They are harmless to humans but have an unusual diet among snakes. In addition to small rodents, they eat reptiles including other snakes. And they also have been known to eat their young at times.
