SamTrans Testing New Fare Boxes on Buses

The fare boxes accept all forms of payment and will be installed on hundreds of SamTrans buses by June 1 if testing is successful.

The San Mateo County Transit District began to test new fare boxes on its buses on Wednesday.

The fare boxes, which will be tried out on five buses for approximately four weeks, are designed to accept cash, coins, tokens, paper tickets and paper magnetic-stripe tickets, SamTrans spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew said.

If the testing process runs smoothly, the fare boxes will be installed on 322 SamTrans buses by June 1.
