Six Rescued Off Sinking Boat in Pillar Point Harbor

The boat remains about 60 feet underwater just outside the harbor.

Late Thursday morning, Pillar Point Harbor staff responded to a distress call of a vessel returning to the harbor that was taking on water and sinking.

All six passengers were rescued and a good amount of gear and portable fuel tanks were salvaged, according to  San Mateo County Harbor District harbormaster Scott Grindy.

Around 9 a.m. the group that had gone out rock fishing on a recreational fishing boat started taking on water and called the U.S. Coast Guard, said Grindy.

The vessel went down outside of the harbor between the two marker buoys in about 40 plus feet of water.

United States Coast Guard Captain of the Port from San Francisco called harbor staff and thanked them soon after the event for their valiant efforts of life saving and responding so fast, said Grindy.

No one was injured in the capsizing.

The boat remains this afternoon about 60 feet underwater just outside the harbor, Grindy said.

The cause of the vessel sinking is not yet known. When the salvage operation will occur is also yet to be determined.
