Melissa Morgan Quartet
The
respected Herb Wong says "Melissa Morgan is a contagious, true jazz
singer, and she simply grows on you with intoxication." A review of her debut CD, "Until I Met
You," describes Morgan as a jazz vocalist with a bluesy, soulful,
R&B-tinged approach. Morgan,
however, isn't a belter or a shouter of the Ernestine
Anderson variety, and she isn't bluesy, soulful, and R&B-tinged
in an aggressive or forceful way. Rather, she favors a more laid-back and
relaxed sort of grit, drawing on influences that include Dinah
Washington, Nancy Wilson,
Billie
Holiday and Shirley Horn.
But Morgan
is more improvisation-minded and jazz-oriented than Wilson,
who has often favored jazz-influenced traditional pop and jazz-influenced
R&B over straight-ahead vocal jazz.
Her fans are many in the SF/Bay Area, as evidenced by the enthusiastic
response she elicited at her concert at Piedmont Piano Co. in Oakland in August
2013, and at Yoshi's Oakland in 2009.
Mellissa was one of four featured artists to an enthusiastic audience at
Yoshi's San Francisco on October 20, 2013, at the 6th Annual San Francisco Filipino
American Jazz Festival.
