Introduction to some new FRIENDS!

The Friends of the Half Moon Bay Library have a new look, new board, and lots of new ideas - and we want to invite you to get to know us better!

Hope Atmore and Julie Mell took over as co-Presidents of the Friends of the Half Moon Bay Library after long-time and amazingly hard working Greta McElroy relocated to Gold Country in February.  In addition, they have been joined by Deb Kessler, Vice President and head of membership; Roy Salume, head of Book Sales; Laura Wilson, Secretary; and anchored by Friends veteran, Nancy Evans as Treasurer. Though the faces are new, the goals are the same! The Friends provide funding for the numerous programs offered at the library including: children's reading programs, teen poetry contests, literacy programs, guest speakers and much much more.  This new board has brought about some exciting changes for the Friends including a new logo and new membership levels with an assortment of incentives.  Additionally, the Friends now have a website where upcoming events will be posted and members can join and renew on-line.

Over the past few months, the Friends have worked hard to promote membership and grow our group.  In doing so, we hope to spread the word and garner the support of the community for a bigger and better library space.  As anyone who frequents our community library knows, the current building, constructed in 1971, is inadequate for our growing population.  At 7,825 square feet, it is both outdated and too small to meet the needs of our diverse community.  The library is loved and used by people young and old and everywhere in between.  It is a safe meeting spot for middle school students to do homework or wait for a ride, a hang out for moms, dads and young children during story hour, and a place for seniors to access computers and a quiet place to read.  Everyone loves the library!  The city supports a move toward a new library and the County of San Mateo is ready to match the funds that Half Moon Bay can raise.  The time to act has come! The Friends invite you to become an active friend and supporter for this cause!
