Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside Present Plans to Build New Dual Gymnasium

A look at the Cunha-Cabrillo Unified School District Boys and Girls Club dual gym project.

Great news for Coastside kids — and adults. The Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside is that much closer to actualizing a longtime dream of having their own facility, which would serve Cabrillo Unified School District students, Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside participants and adults for sport league games, said Boys & Girls Club executive director Judith Guerrero.

"It is a very exciting time for all of us at the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside," said Guerrero. "We are finally building the dream. With this new facility we hope to gain greater visibility and greater reach with the youth of the Coastside."

Cabrillo Unified School District announced last week that they are partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside to build a dual gymnasium by helping to fund the project through Measure S bond money.

Here's what else Guerrero has to say about the project and partnernship:

"This new facility will be more than a gym it will be the “Clubhouse” the founding fathers of our organization envision and more," said Guerrero. "For years we have been working with the middle school population, with our new facility in combination with the Ted Adcock community center we will be able to reach the high school, and elementary population. We want our community to view our new facilities as the place where the youth of the Coastside will begin their “great futures.” We are looking forward to our growth as the leading youth organization on the Coastside. This is another great partnership for the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside and the Cabrillo Unified School District."

Beginning Jan. 14 the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside will be making use of space available at the Ted Adcock Center to offer a workshop class titled Visual Voices.

"We partnered with an organization called Streetside Stories that promotes the cultivation of young people’s voices to develop literacy and arts skills, fosters educational equity, values diversity and build community," said Guerrero. "With this partnership we will be reaching out to the elementary school population. Fifteen kids from grades 4th and 5th will participate in our new program.  This program will also be offer to 15 kids from our current population the 6th, 7th and 8th graders."
