Major Project Underway in El Granada

Beaches and native habitats will be protected from wastewater overflows.

Have you noticed the new installation project in El Granada?

Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside (SAM), has begun installing a 200,000-gallon passive underground stormwater retention basin beneath a portion of the Burnham Strip.

Completion is expected by October.

The project is considered an essential water quality enhancement to its Wet Weather Flow Management Program. It will control rain runoff from Montara to Half Moon Bay.

“The stormwater retention basin is a key addition to the system that furthers SAM’s goal of proactively preventing sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), managing peak flows from storms, and continuing our member agencies’ commitment to protecting local water quality and maintaining clean beaches for all who live, visit and enjoy the Coastside,” said Steve Leonard, SAM’s General Manager.

Crews will work Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Some work may also be performed on Saturdays.

“Surfrider Foundation San Mateo County has been collaborating with SAM to monitor water quality on the San Mateo Coastside for more than a decade. We see this achievement as a tremendous step forward towards enhancing and protecting water quality and native habitat in an area that’s really important as a prime recreational spot at Surfer’s Beach and other beaches along the coast,” said Ed Larenas, chair of the San Mateo County chapter.

The bottom line for residents: a few minor construction hassles now in exchange for long-term protection of water quality.
