Through Art and Children's Books, Half Moon Bay High Students Raise Funds for the School

A perk of being a teenager in Half Moon Bay is the ability to work at the Pumpkin Festival. It’s a great way to get community service and feel connected to the community.

One booth that attracts many people is the Spin Art and Candle Making booth. At this booth, people wait in line to create their very own masterpiece; a frisbee with limitless possibilities or a candle made of multi-colored grains of sand.

The children are asked to pick a color frisbee and go crazy with as much paint as they want or if they chose to make a candle they can pick many different colors to create something truly beautiful and original.

John Evans, husband of Art teacher Mrs. Evans, has been helping to organize the cheer team as volunteers for the Spin Art and Candle Making booth for many years. The Half Moon Bay High School cheer squad have been the volunteers there for many years.

Senior Isabella Valencia has been working at both for the past three years.

“I love working with the little kids and making them happy,” Valencia said about her past experiences at the booths.

“It’s awesome to see all the kids get creative,” said second-year volunteer and junior Abbie Drobnick.

At this year's Spin Art and Candle Making booth, students raised about $1,800 thanks to all the community support.

Over $3,000 was earned for the Art Department at this year's Pumpkin Festival from selling coloring books and having art students work the face painting booth.

It's not too late to contribute! Books are being sold for $10, and coloring books are for sale for $5. See Mrs. Evans to purchase a copy and support the Half Moon Bay High School Art Department.
