Messing Around with Boats

Musings about things nautical.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.  Many books have been written about it and as we speak no doubt more are being written, but for a quick introduction with a lot of great illustrations you still can't beat the Eyewitness book TITANIC.  Living beside the ocean as we do, how can we not be interested in ships?  THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SHIPS offers a broad view of the entire subject with plenty of pictures.

Moving from the general to the particular AIRCRAFT CARRIERS INSIDE AND OUT  offers a fascinating glimpse of a class of ship we seldom see around here except during Fleet Week.  For a great look at military history as well as an underwater exploration adventure I'd suggest SEARCH FOR THE BATTLESHIP BISMARCK.

Finally, seafaring history is once again going to be made right here in the San Francisco Bay Area.   In 2013 the America's Cup race will be held in the Bay, which will give us the sight of spectacular sailboats racing each other around the islands against a breathtaking backdrop. If you can't make it up there to watch perhaps someone will be streaming the event.  And locally, you can always go down to to check out the boats and dream.
