Singapore Culinary Students Tour Pillar Point Harbor

The group learned about the salmon and crabbing industries and history of the harbor's fishing community.

Forty students from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) Singapore Campus toured Pillar Point Harbor early Monday morning as part the school’s Bay Area tour program, visiting farms, harbors and wineries to learn about different food source industries.

This was the second time a CIA group from Singapore attended the tour.

Experiences like this apply to the students’ “future in the food service and culinary industry,” said San Mateo County Harbor District Harbor Master Scott Grindy.

Pillar Point Harbor general manager Peter Grenell and fisherman Jim Anderson led the tour, continuing to grow and expand the program, which was originally initiated in a contract between the CIA and San Mateo County Harbor District commissioner Pietro Parravano approximately three years ago.

On the tour, students learned about the history of the harbor’s fishing community.

Grenell and Anderson also explained to the group “how the fisheries have changed with a focus on the returning salmon season and smolt pen development,” said Grindy, “as well as the crabbing industry and ground fisheries efforts.”
