Half Moon Bay Death Notices

Some of the people with ties to Half Moon Bay who passed away recently.

Ellen Bond, a resident of Moss Beach, was born in Illinois in 1947, raised in Ohio until the late 1970's when she moved to Florida for over 10 years. Her love for animals drew her to work in an aquarium before beginning her career as a controller. After moving to California in 1989, she continued her work as a controller until 2003. Photography was one of Ellen's favorite hobbies, her other was collecting seashells. Before her cancer diagnosis, she lived in Moss Beach with her longtime companion, Steven Reid. She died on Sept. 16 at age 66 after a brief battle with lung cancer. A celebration of Ellen's life will take place on Oct. 13 at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company.

John M. Costa, born in Santa Barbara, Terceira, Azores, was a member of Our Lady of Pillar Catholic Church of Half Moon Bay, I.D.E.S., Hall of Half Moon Bay, and Portuguese Culture Center of Half Moon Bay. He is survived by his wife Nilia N. Costa, son Joe H. Costa and two sisters Lourdes M. Costa and Licia M. Costa, all of Half Moon Bay. Costa died on Sept. 27 at the age of 56.

LaNora "Sam" Eva Steinhagen Clemings, born in Iowa in 1943, graduated from high school and then relocated to Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. It was shortly thereafter she secured a position as a telephone operator in Lodi, with PT&T, later Pacific Bell. She married Bill Clemings on in 1968 where they made Lodi their home. She passed away at her home surrounded by her family, following a brief bout with cancer at the age of 70.
