Cal Trans-Go to Web

Having driven up from Pescadero I stopped at the Cal Trans maintenance yard on the south end of Half Moon Bay to ask a question.

I asked if I could have the name of the person who inspected Hwy 1 from Half Moon Bay to the Santa Cruz County line.

The Cal Trans employee told me that it was not one person but that all of the road staff did that.

So I proceeded to ask the wrong question, why aren’t things fixed.

Unfortunately the employee asked me what I was talking about and what highway I was asking about.

Once again I said Hwy 1 and proceeded to ask more wrong “ detailed questions “ about slip downs, damaged guardrails and un-cleared bike lanes. None of which are recent occurrences.

At that point I was accused of being argumentive and told to go to Cal Tran’s website several times while I was trying to keep the conversation going.

As I realized “ I’m not the one that is angry here “, I look around at a huge facility stocked with oversize equipment, buildings and a large fuel tank. When that didn’t exist the roads were better taken care of and I believe now that the tunnel is operating a large burden has been removed from Cal Trans to keep the closed Hwy 1 “ Devil’s Slide “ area open.

My wife and I delivered the mail from Pacifica to the Santa Cruz County line starting in 1968 when the speed limit was 65mph on Hwy 1. The route has not changed much but the road is not as safe now because of deferred maintenance.

If the Cal Trans crew is actually inspecting Hwy 1, I would like to suggest that they “ Go to the Cal Trans website “ and report it. Maybe they could do it on their time like they asked me to??

Is Cal Trans ignorant of the “ New Bicycle Clearance Law “ coming into effect in September?

Sincerely,

Herb Hamor
