Poll: Is Belmont Bicycle Friendly?

How would you rate Belmont in terms of accessibility to cyclists?

 

Bicycling Magazine recently named San Francisco the eighth most bike-friendly city in the country.

New bike lanes, biker-right-of-way signals and bike parking helped the city obtain its ranking.

About 20 miles south of San Francisco in Belmont, bikers are a less common sight. However, Belmont has worked to make the city more biker-friendly, including adding increased bicycle access especially near the Highway 101 and Ralston Avenue interchange. The new bike/pedestrian bridge known as opened last fall and not only connects the Sterling Downs neighborhood to the Belmont Sports Complex, it gives recreational and commuter cyclists a safe route to more extensive bike trails and workplaces in Redwood Shores and beyond.

The vast majority of Belmont is not bike friendly. There is no major north/south bike route for commuters. San Mateo has a bike lane on Old County that abruptly ends at the Belmont border. Instead, Belmont has prioritized space for free parking for the auto shops. There are also no bike lanes west of Alameda on Ralston, linking up with the Canada Road Sunday bike route. Traffic moves along at 50 mph, discouraging Ralston and Fox kids from biking to school. Instead, their parents need to drop them off, increasing traffic.

The vast majority of Belmont isn't *car* friendly. Narrow, winding, hilly streets don't make a lot of room for bike lanes. Listen, Ralston itself may not be "bike friendly." But to say the Old County transition from San Mateo to Belmont is bad, which from my eyes simply removes a white stripe from the side of the road at the Belmont city border: http://goo.gl/maps/us8P well, I don't get it. Does San Carlos have a $10M bike bridge across 101, fer cryinoutloud?

I think we should put pressure on SF Water to allow bikes on Sheep Camp Trail - then you could ride from the bottom of the Lake Trail to Canada Rd without having to worry about traffic. Can someone explain why bikes are not allowed?

Tim, there is plenty of room for bike lanes on Ralston and Old County. There isn't currently room because the City has prioritized car speed on Ralston and free parking on Old County. I have ridden Old County several dozen times en route to Hillsdale Caltrain. The striped line makes a huge difference. Without it, cyclists are forced to ride in the door zone or take the entire lane. This slows down cars or forces them to pass in the oncoming traffic lane. it is extremely dangerous and I have had a bunch of close calls. I think that the bike bridge is a great addition, but It will never get maximum use if residents are too scared to bike to it. Sometimes the most expensive solutions aren't the most beneficial.

Rode to the bike bridge yesterday and was reminded of how difficult the approach is. Once you cross El Camino, bike have to somehow get over to the left to make the turn onto the bridge entrance. Right around Chuck's Donuts and the burger place its taking your life into your hands to try to get to the left turn lane. If you want to take the route that goes by the post office, you have to get to the left turn lane under the train tracks, which is another suicide run.
